SUMMARY:Practical Access to Victim's Rights
DESCRIPTION:*This is not a NAVAA-hosted event.  Please see the registration page for contact details.* \nRights for victims and co-victims of crime have been formalized in all 50 states\, the District of Columbia\, and the federal government. These rights are available throughout multiple stages of the justice system but obligations to ensure access to those rights start when crimes are reported to law enforcement agencies. \nVictims and co-victims have unique experiences and desires for engagement with the justice system. Ensuring practical access to victims’ rights during law enforcement contact can be an effective gateway to meeting their unique needs. \nInformation from this webinar can help participants review the following considerations: \n\ncommon victims’ rights\,\napplication of victims’ rights during law enforcement actions and\nexamples of jurisdiction-specific victims’ rights\n\nFor more information\, click HERE.

SUMMARY:Rethinking Public Safety in Small Town America
DESCRIPTION:*This is not a NAVAA-hosted event.  Please refer to the registration page for contact information.* \nPlease join NCJA for our next Policy Session on July 23 at 2:00 pm ET: Shifting Populations\, Escalating Risks: Rethinking Public Safety in Small-Town America. \nCommunity violence is declining. However\, police encounters are becoming more dangerous\, especially across rural and small-town America. This presentation unpacks the drivers of that trend: pandemic-era population shifts\, scarce behavioral-health resources\, and a surge of mental-health and disturbance 911 calls managed by understaffed\, under-trained departments. We also outline the contexts in which police contacts are most likely to escalate into physical altercations. Finally\, we’ll spotlight solutions already delivering results\, including civilian mobile-crisis teams in Denver\, Eugene\, Olympia\, and rural Kansas\, statewide de-escalation mandates\, and tele-behavioral-health hubs. \nFor more information\, click HERE.

SUMMARY:Policing Domestic Violence: Past\, Present\, and Future
DESCRIPTION:*This is a non-NAVAA event.  Any questions should be directed to the organizers on the registration page* \nA movement to treat domestic violence as a public safety issue rather than a private family matter spawned a wave of reform\, culminating in the Violence Against Women Act in the 1994 federal Crime Bill. Mandatory arrest policies\, in particular\, have been widely adopted over the past several decades. \nHowever\, research suggests these laws may not deter domestic violence as intended and may inadvertently draw survivors into the criminal justice system. Moving forward\, how can we ensure new approaches work to interrupt domestic violence\, hold abusers accountable\, and protect survivors? \nJoin the Council on Criminal Justice’s Women’s Justice Commission and a panel of experts to examine the complex impact of domestic violence policing and explore promising strategies to improve safety\, accountability\, and justice for women. \nThe conversation will be followed by a Q&A.  For more information\, click HERE
